John Bennett (n4xi) > What can I say. Just can't resist a train photo-op. Yes, I know the train should have been closer. Only problem, it was at a dead stop. They were switching grain hoppers to another elevator behind the one in the foreground. Still is a good shot.
John Bennett (n4xi) > Pawnee Rock (Pawnee Rock, KS). A key point on the Santa Fe Trail. Most skirmishes with Indians took place withing 50 miles of this location. Travelers on the trail would stop here and climb the rock to view the prairie for miles in all directions. The top of the rock is now lower than it was. During the late 1890's stone was removed for building other structures. See the next image for more information.
John Bennett (n4xi) > The purpose of the observation platform is to allow visitors to see the high plains from the same elevation that the early travelers on the Santa Fe trail did. Note the circular stairs at the right rear. As mentioned in the previous frame, the top of the rock was quaried for building materials in the late 1890's.
John Bennett (n4xi) > The view SW atop the Shawnee Rock observation platform. The nearby town is Pawnee Rock, KS.
