Gallitzin, PA : Famed Pennsy tunnels and Horseshoe curve near Gallitzin, PA. I hope to find some of my earlier images taken back in the late 80's and early 90's to supplement these.

Iowa Traction : Taken while I was on one of my whirlwind tours of the west in February of 2000 over President's Day weekend. I had driven across the eastern half of Nebraska and the western half of Iowa to reach Mason City near sunset. A *very* boring drive with one exception when I crossed the NE/IA state line. There was a river valley there. Otherwise, it was flat - completely flat. The only hill was when I crossed over an Interstate highway. The drive, however, was worth the effort when I found the traction. All of these images are from 35mm color negatives scanned in with a Nikon ED5000 and then restored in the Gimp. Fast forward to July 2009. Nine years later on a trip west I visited this same area but with a digital camera in mid-July. Didn't catch anything running on the rails, but did manage to find the motors.

East Troy Electric Railroad Museum : The East Troy Electric RR Museum located at East Troy, WI. Taken in the first week of June 2000. It was heavily overcast with rain pelting down from time-to-time. Bad conditions for pictures. Would be worth the effort to go back and visit when the weather is good. They have a nice collection of equipment - a lot of it in working order. The pictures were restored from 35mm color negatives.

UP 3985 Clinchfield Christmas Special : In November of 1992 the UP took their Challenger to the rails of the former Clinchfield Railroad in the coal fields of Virgina and Kentucky. There, she was dressed up to look like the 4-6-6-4s of the Clinchfield era when they ran their Santa Special down the main line. These pictures catch the train as it was on it's way to the Clinchfield passing through SE Missouri and then on the return trip in Southern Indiana.

Union Pacific West of Lusk, WY : A conveyor belt would be an appropriate description of this line. Constant activity - all coal drags. Several meets. It just wasn't that hard. There's just alot of them. BNSF has a connector near I-25, and while there were lots of trains, they were all sitting. For whatever reason, the RR seemed to be shut down. None of them were in a very good location to shoot without trespassing on RR or private property, so left it at that.

The Hill Line (D&SL - The Moffat Road), West End : The west end of the Rollins Pass Line (aka "The Hill Line") of the Denver and Salt Lake Railway (D&SL). The railway was founded by David Moffat of Denver. The line has a rich history and is well worth the time to read the book entitled "Rails That Climb" by Edward T. Bolinger and published by the Colorado Railroad Museum. The line was intended to only be a temporary line until a tunnel could be built through James Peak. It was about 1902 when work began on the line that would soon become the highest standard gauge railway in the world ever to be built - then and now. Due financial difficulties, the tunnel was not built until the late 20's, opening in 1928. The "Hill Line" lasted until the ICC approved it's abandonment in May of 1935. One thing that I was hoping to find were the remains of Arrow. I have a good idea where it might have been, but was unable to find any tangible evidence. For a fairly large town, there is virtually nothing left.

The Georgetown Loop : The famed Georgetown Loop re-created in modern times. The line runs just beneath the circular bridge (just west of Georgetown, CO) to Silver Plume. Taken on my July 2009 road trip. I have slides from a trip some 15 years ago when I actually rode the train. I hope to find and scan them in soon.

Inglefield (IN) Fire : CSX main (former C&EI) north of Evansville at Inglefield, IN. As I left work shortly after 5PM this evening (01 Oct 09), I heard the tower talking to a crew out by Inglefield. It was apparent something had happened. In a few moments I heard that the lead engine was on fire and the crew had safely evacuated after stopping the train. Grabbed the camera and headed north. Compliments to the CSX Trainmaster and the crews. Very well handled.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic RR : The RR is located within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It runs approximately 30 miles from Cleveland on the north down to Akron. I was surprised to learn that trains run weekdays W-F and weekends during the fall. Due to train frequency, I was unable to get a shot of the train itself. Cyclists use the towpath to go from point-to-point and then take the train back to where they started. Despite the fact it was raining steadily, there were still a number of cyclists to be seen. At one station (Peninsula), there was even a bike shop.
