Princeton EMP Damage : Friday, 07/21/06. When the squall line of a cold front ripped through the area Friday afternoon and evening, the Princeton (IN) APRS weather station took a direct hit. The only thing that was not damaged was the computer monitor (it was not on at the time). The X1W-1 prototype was extensively damaged - beyond repair.

Don Quixote Rides Again (Epilogue to Proctor) : The guy traveling with me probably thought I had lost it. Coming back from Peoria on I-74 approaching Le Roy (IL), I noticed some rather large wind mills on the horizon. I've seen wind mills before, but not this many. I estimated 10. Took the exit at Le Roy. Had to be right behind the town. Nope. Ten miles away. And there weren't just 10. As far as you could see, there were wind mills. So, for the next hour, I was chasing wind mills and shooting pictures. There is no vane for steering the mills, so must assume this is controlled remotely. All of them were facing in exactly the same direction. On the tech side, I would be curious to know how they phase all the generators together. Googled and found out this is a project of the University of Illinois. There are 200 such windmills planned. The tip of the prop reaches some 300' into the air at the apex of it's travel. Standing beneath one of these behemoths while it's turning is an experience. You hear a slow, constant 'swoosh-swoosh-swoosh'. Awesome. I believe they said the project, upon completion, would be able to power 30,000 households. Wow. It struck me as I was driving around up there that this entire story had some strange similarities to Don Quixote and his faithful squire Sancho chasing wind mills. There was, however, no Dulcinea, so no fair maiden's virtue to save.
