1980s Galleries

Roller Races (Evansville, IN) : Roller Races held at Eastland Mall in Evansville (IN) in the winter of 1985 or 1986. Mike Hewitt (yes, that is Mike in the pics) brought a group over from Clarksville Cyclery in New Albany. The original negatives were scanned in using a Nikon Coolscan 5000 ED at 4000 dpi. The negatives had deteriorated badly and required a good deal of work in Gimp (Linux) to get them restored to what you see here.

Le Roy Criterium : The Le Roy Criterium held in Le Roy, IL the summer of 1983. Leroy was a small Illinois prairie town east of Bloomington-Normal. This was a popular crit. In fact, we traveled to Illinois for just about all our races. Except for the Evansville Crit, there was nothing in Indiana. As I restored these images, I couldn't help but wonder where these guys are today.Some images were a bit soft, and I almost did not restore them. However, at this point, they are historical, so I did.And yes, seems like the photos are a bit biased. Most of them have my teammates. The EBRT on the jerseys stands for Evansville Bicycle Racing Team. The road trips were fun. We'd take off on Friday evening, head for Illinois and come back on Sunday. Six in a motel room hoping the manager didn't figure it out. I believe it was on this road trip where one of the guys was repairing his sew-ups and un-knowingly sat on an open tube of glue. He managed to glue his shorts to his butt - and I don't mean his bike shorts.

Independence Day Criterium : Criterium held in Saint Louis (MO) on Independence Day - probably 1983. The crit circled Busch Stadium. Busch stadium (at least this one) is no more. I believe the date is July of '83. If someone knows different, let me know.

WJBC Criterium : Held in Bloomington-Normal, IL. I also know there were some names there. Rather than show my ignorance, I'm not going to make any guesses. If any of you know who some of these guys are, please email me. You can also add comments to the photographs (and please do). Freedom Festival Criterium, Evansville IN (1981) : Initially I only found 20 slides. I have now located 60 slides and am convinced there are more. There are also B/W negatives that I have yet to scan and restore. I tried to order the slides, and while some are in order, it was apparent when I working with the photo editor (after the scanning process), that some are out of order. When I have more time I will attempt to re-sort the images. The four pics at the end were labeled as Freedom Festival Race, but seem to be in Garvin Park rather than downtown. I believe this must have been a local training race held sometime near the big crit.

Mystery Race I (IL somewhere?) : I have looked at these images a number of times and have been unable to find anything to trigger a memory as to where this is. However, it is obvious that this is located in a narrow river valley. My guess is somewhere in central Illinois or in the St. Louis area. That is where we raced. I'm hoping one of you guys will know where this is. If so, email me.
